Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for this visa, applicants must meet all of the following:

  • Receive a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) with full job details
  • Meet English language requirement at CEFR B2 level or equivalent
  • Have financial support of £1,270 (unless exempt or sponsored)
  • Provide a TB test result if required

Certificate of Sponsorship Requirements for a Minister of Religion Visa

A valid job offer must come from a licensed religious sponsor approved under the Minister of Religion route. General or student sponsor licences are not sufficient.

If the organisation does not already hold the correct licence, it must apply or update its existing licence before issuing sponsorship.

What the Certificate of Sponsorship must include

The CoS is a digital record issued by the sponsor and must confirm:

  • Full name, job title, and salary details
  • Confirmation that the role is a Minister of Religion position
  • Evidence that the applicant is qualified for religious duties
  • Confirmation of membership in the religious organisation or order
  • Description of responsibilities, such as:
    • Leading worship and preaching
    • Providing pastoral support
    • Teaching religious principles
    • Conducting ceremonies and faith-based activities

Restricted activities

The CoS must also confirm that the role does NOT mainly involve:

  • General classroom teaching (unless theological in nature)
  • Media production or broadcasting work
  • Cleaning or domestic tasks
  • Clerical or administrative support (unless part of senior leadership duties)

Salary Requirements

There is no fixed salary threshold for this visa.

Instead, the salary must:

  • Match or exceed what a settled worker would earn in the same role
  • Comply with National Minimum Wage rules
  • Reflect fair and lawful employment standards

Financial Maintenance Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following:

  • Resided legally in the UK for 12 months or more
  • Sponsor confirms maintenance support in CoS (A-rated sponsor)
  • Show £1,270 in personal savings held for 28 consecutive days

Dependant financial requirements:

  • Partner: £285
  • First child: £315
  • Each additional child: £200

English Language Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate English ability at CEFR B2 level in all skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening).

This can be met through:

  • Approved English language test

Visa holders may extend their stay:

  • Maximum total stay: 6 years
