Graduate Visa | Post Study Work Visa (PSW) 2026

The Graduate Visa route allows international students to remain in the UK after completing their studies and either work or search for employment opportunities. Under this route, you can stay for 2 years, or 3 years for PhD graduates, without needing a sponsoring employer.

This visa provides flexibility, enabling you to explore different career paths and gain valuable work experience after completing your studies.

What is the UK Graduate Visa?

The Graduate Visa, also referred to as the post-study work visa, is designed for international students who wish to stay and work after finishing their education.

To qualify, you must have successfully completed a degree at bachelor’s level or above from a recognised higher education provider that is approved by the Home Office. This visa allows you to remain in the UK without requiring sponsorship from an employer.

Difference between Graduate Visa and Skilled Worker Visa

The Graduate Visa is an unsponsored route, meaning you do not need a job offer or a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) to apply. This gives you the freedom to work in any role or sector.

In contrast, the Skilled Worker Visa requires a confirmed job offer from an approved sponsor, along with meeting specific salary and skill level requirements.

Eligibility

You can apply for a Graduate Visa if all the following conditions are met:

  • You are currently in the UK
  • You hold a valid Student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa
  • You have completed a UK bachelor’s degree, postgraduate degree, or another eligible qualification
  • Your education provider has officially informed the Home Office that you have successfully completed your course

Duration of UK Graduate PSW Visa

Once approved, the Graduate Visa allows you to stay and work in the UK for:

  • 2 years for undergraduate or master’s degree holders
  • 3 years for PhD graduates

During this period, you can work in most roles, switch jobs freely, and gain experience across different industries.

Requirements for UK Post Study Work Visax

The Graduate Visa is one of the most flexible visa routes available.

Unlike many other visa categories:

  • You do not need a job offer
  • You do not need employer sponsorship
  • You do not need to meet a financial requirement
  • You do not need to prove English language ability (as it is already satisfied through your studies)

Documents you’ll need to apply

When submitting your application, you will typically need:

  • A valid passport or travel document
  • Your biometric residence permit (BRP), if issued with your Student visa
  • Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number

The CAS reference number is provided by your education institution when you were offered a place. If you cannot locate it, you can request it from your provider.

Successful course completion requirement

To qualify, you must complete your course within the UK.

You can apply once your education provider has notified the Home Office that you have successfully finished your course. You do not need to wait until you receive your final certificate or attend a graduation ceremony.

Your partner and children

If your partner or children are already in the UK as your dependants under your Student visa, they can continue to stay as your dependants under the Graduate Visa.

  • Their visa will expire on the same date as yours
  • Children born in the UK during your Student visa can also apply as dependants

Each dependant must submit their own application and meet the relevant requirements.
